i had to postponed my ceremony date as i had to go out of country for a week. now i see my status as background verification in progress. is this normal ?

You have not much to worry about, you should get a new date within the next month (at least that is what I remember before Covid). I don't know about 'background verification in progress', I am sure one of the forum members will add some clarity.
