Marrying and Sponsoring a Ugandan Citizen
Marriage to a Ugandan Citizen
Every country has its own laws that apply to its citizens marrying a person from a different country. Getting married to a Ugandan citizen with the goal of eventually bringing them to Canada to live is a process with many steps.
If you want to bring your Ugandan spouse or partner to live in Canada, you must then file a sponsorship application for them to become a permanent resident. If they would like to visit you in Canada while their application is in process, they must also apply for a visitor visa. For more information, please see our family sponsorship page and our visitor visa page.
Processing Time
If you file a Canadian sponsorship application for your Ugandan spouse or partner, this application takes an average of 10-12 months.
A visitor visa application for your spouse or partner to visit you in Canada while the sponsorship applications are processing takes an average of 3 –14 days.
Please see our pages on family sponsorship and Canadian visitor visa for more information on the processing times of these applications.

Ugandan Marriage Ceremony
Registration of marriages in Uganda is governed by the following laws:
- marriage act cap 251 laws of Uganda for the celebration of monogamous marriages
- customary marriage (registration) act cap 248 that makes provision for the registration of customary marriages
- Hindu marriage and divorce act cap 250 that regulates the marriage of and provide for matrimonial causes between Hindus and persons of allied religions.
- Marriage and divorce of Mohammedans act cap 252 that relates to the marriage and divorce of Muslims.
Marriages and divorces of Muslims are celebrated between persons professing the Islamic religion according to the rites and observances of Mohammed. The marriage act ceases to apply to persons that elect to conduct a Muslim marriage.
Hindu marriages and divorces are solemnized between Hindus or persons of allied religions like Buddhists of Indian origin, Jains or Sikhs and are solemnized in accordance with the customary rites and ceremonies of either party to the marriage.
Where customary marriages are celebrated to the rites of an African community and one of the parties is a member to that community, they should be registered with the Sub County or town clerk of their respective marriage districts.
Monogamous marriages under the marriage act can only be celebrated in the office of the registrar or a licensed building of a place of worship belonging to a church, denomination or body.
