Marriage to a Paraguayan Citizen

Every country has its own laws that apply to its citizens marrying a person from a different country. Getting married to a Paraguayan citizen with the goal of eventually bringing them to Canada to live is a process with many steps.

If you want to bring your Paraguayan spouse or partner to live in Canada, you must then file a sponsorship application for them to become a permanent resident. If they would like to visit you in Canada while their application is in process, they must also apply for a visitor visa. Paraguayan Marriage Basic Requirements

In order to marry a citizen of Paraguay, you must demonstrate to the Paraguayan government that you are eligible to do so. This includes:

• Proof of country of birth
• Proof of single status
• Proof of age requirement

 

Paraguayan Marriage Ceremony

As in Canada, marriages in Paraguay can be contracted in a civil or religious ceremony. Civil weddings are performed at the Juzgado de Paz by a Paraguayan official known as “Juez de Paz”. The Juzgado de Paz offices are located throughout Paraguay and are plentiful in large cities. Your first step should be to contact an Official to discuss required documents and other procedures. Alternatively, you or your fiancé(e) can call or visit one in person.

• The Juez de Paz will likely require certified copies of both spouses’ birth certificates. For birth certificates issued in Canada, you will need to obtain a Spanish-language translation of the document and they must be legalized.
• Both spouses will also be asked to present proof that they are eligible to marry — in other words, that they are not currently married. For a Paraguayan citizen, this is a relatively simple matter of requesting a copy of his or her civil registration, a document issued by the Paraguayan Civil Registry (Registro Civil Central) that indicates marital status.

Religious weddings in Paraguay are handled by individual religious officials and involve similar documentary procedures, along with additional religious requirements.
