Marrying and Sponsoring a Macedonian Citizen
Marriage to a Macedonian Citizen
Every country has its own laws that apply to its citizens marrying a person from a different country. Getting married to a Macedonian citizen with the goal of eventually bringing them to Canada to live is a process with many steps.
If you want to bring your Macedonian spouse or partner to live in Canada, you must then file a sponsorship application for them to become a permanent resident. If they would like to visit you in Canada while their application is in process, they must also apply for a visitor visa. For more information, please see our family sponsorship page and our visitor visa page.
Processing Time
If you file a Canadian sponsorship application for your Macedonian spouse or partner, this application takes an average of 10-12 months.
A visitor visa application for your spouse or partner to visit you in Canada while the sponsorship applications are processing takes an average of 3 –14 days.
Please see our pages on family sponsorship and Canadian visitor visa for more information on the processing times of these applications.

Macedonian Marriage Ceremony
Marriage in Macedonia is a function of the Macedonian civil authorities. Canadian citizens should contact a Macedonian Registrar’s Office (Matichna sluzba) for detailed information.
If a Canadian citizen marries a Macedonian citizen in Macedonia, s/he needs to obtain the following documents (required by the Macedonian authorities):
- Valid passport
- Birth Certificate (issued within the last 6 months);
- Sworn Statement for free marital status including a statement that no impediments exist to the marriage.
- If one spouse is widowed, an original or certified copy of death certificate of former spouse(s)
- If one spouse is divorced, an original final decree or a certified copy. A certified translation of all documents may be required.
- If one spouse is a minor, a statement executed by a parent or legal guardian and signed by a notary public giving consent in accordance with the laws of Canada, is required.
- The sworn statement can be obtained in the Consular Section of the Canadian Embassy in Serbia.
- A licensed court translator must translate the documents into Macedonian language.
Upon presentation of these documents to the Registrar clerk, s/he will set the date for the wedding ceremony.
The Canadian citizen is not subject to a residency requirement if s/he marries a Macedonian citizen.
If the Canadian citizen marries a foreigner in Macedonia, both of them are not subject to a waiting residency period.
At the time of the marriage ceremony the couple is obliged to bring a licensed court translator, as well as two witnesses. Witnesses should have their passports or Macedonian identification cards with them.
Only the civil marriage ceremony is a fully recognized legal marriage in the country.
