The Document Checklist IMM 5533 or IMM 5589 or IMM 5629

Table of Contents

The document checklist is one of the first forms you should print and use as a guide to make sure your sponsorship application is complete.

It’s really important to note that there are many different versions of this form. There are a few ways in which your document checklist might be different:

  • There are different document checklists for sponsoring spouses (use the IMM 5533) vs common law partners (use the IMM 5589) vs conjugal partners (IMM 5629) and
  • There are different additional requirements depending upon where your partner lives and what country he or she is from and these additional requirements aren’t always included in the basic document checklist. (For example: an Afghani partner will need to complete additional IRCC forms and provide additional documents.)

However, for this example, in which are couple are married and the spouse is Brazilian, we will be using the IMM 5533 document checklist.

If you would like information about how to complete the IMM 5589 or IMM 5629, or you would like information on additional documentation for each country, please comment at the bottom of this chapter.

The document checklist has a couple of main sections and the form should be completed by both the Sponsor and the Principal Applicant. The form is divided up as follows:

IMM 5533 Preliminary Question: Information about Previous Examination:

This question asks The Sponsor to declare whether the Principal Applicant has already been examined for a previous Permanent Residence application and was not approved.

  • If you have never applied for a PR visa for the applicant before, answer No.
  • If you have applied for a PR visa in the past, answer Yes.

Because Carmen (the principal applicant in our case) has only travelled previously to Canada on a visitor visa, we answer No to this question.

IMM 5533 Document Checklist Part A: Forms Required:

As you complete each form, tick it off on this Document Checklist and make sure you save the most recent copy of the form each time you tick off another form. This will help you keep track of what you have done and what needs to be done. As you are probably realizing, a Sponsorship Application involves perhaps the largest amount of paperwork of any immigration process in Canada so it’s important to be organized.

Stay in control. Use the document checklist. You will need to include it in your application form as well.

Please note that Question 7 is for the principal applicant to fill out as it asks for details of their relationship with their spouse/partner and may involve consulting with the sponsor, but this part of the form is meant to be done by the principal applicant.

IMM 5533 Document Checklist Signatures

Finally, there is a section on signatures. This is crucial. Use it to make sure that all the required signatures from the correct person (in our case there is only a sponsor and a spouse) are signed. Your application will not be complete without the signatures.

Don’t forget to use this final part of the Document Checklist and make sure you tick each box when you have signed a document or form. If you do not have the boxes checked this may slow down your application.
