Inadmissible to Canada

Persons who are inadmissible to Canada will have difficulty coming back into the country if they ever wish to do so. However, there are some ways in which a person who is inadmissible can come back into the country.

Inadmissibility

Persons with criminal records or contagious diseases are inadmissible. This means that they are not allowed into the country. There are three ways to become admissible: Rehabilitation, Authorization to Return to Canada (ARC), and a Temporary Resident Permit (formally known as a Minister’s Permit).

Rehabilitation

Anyone who is convicted of a crime is inadmissible. The ban, however, is not permanent. Depending on the crime and the sentence imposed, a person can apply for rehabilitation after a certain amount of time.

Authorization to Return to Canada (ARC)

The Authorization to Return to Canada is issued to a person who was removed from the country. The purpose of the application is to present reasons why a visa office should make a positive decision and allow the applicant to return.

Temporary Resident Permit (Minister’s Permit)

A temporary resident permit formerly known as a 'Minster’s Permit' can be issued to someone who is not allowed to enter the country. The Temporary Resident Permit  allows him or her to enter or remain in the country. In this instance, entry into the country must be justified by undeniable circumstances as well as the person not being a danger to public health or safety. The temporary resident permit may be cancelled at any time, and the person may be subject to an admissibility hearing or a removal order. A temporary resident permit is issued for a specified period ranging from one week to three years. Sometimes it is extended before it expires; some people who have lived continuously in the country for three to five years under the authority of a valid temporary resident permit may qualify for permanent resident status.
